Typhoon flash hider – 1/2 UNF or 1/2 UNEF

A flash hider or a muzzle brake ?

This is an old debate. By convention, a flash hider is a muzzle device whose primary purpose is to conceal the flash of the shot. With the other hand, we call muzzle brake a barrel accessory whose purpose is to minimize the recoil felt. So in this case, we will talk about the Typhoon flash hider.

Since it is made of aluminum, it is intended exclusively for small annular calibers. No problem for the .22 LR, .17 HMR or .22 WMR. But be careful not to use it on larger caliber firearms.

Anyway, its internal channel is bore to 7 mm, which effectively prohibits .30 calibers. But don’t give in to the temptation to make it your new muzzle brake for AR15!

On which weapons can the Typhoon flash hider be mounted ?

This muzzle device can be a .22 LR rifle flash hider as well as a pistol one. It is so light that it will not unbalance your weapon in either case.

However, be careful, it will only be suitable for handguns whose barrel is fixed so as not to disturb the rearmament kinematics.

Note that the outer diameter of the Typhoon flash hider is 1″ (25.4 mm). This makes it perfect for extending a Ruger 22/45 Lite barrel for example. But to achieve the same effect on rifle’s heavy barrel (let’s say the CZ 457 Varmint), it will be necessary to opt for the Typhoon Mini, which has an outer diameter of 22 mm (.866″).

• The 1/2×20 TPI (also known as 1/2 UNF), the standard in Europe.
• The 1/2×28 TPI (also known as 1/2 UNEF), the standard in USA.
